Aquaculture - a sustainable source of protein

JADE PERCH

The newest Australian Native freshwater fish to the table fish sector. Jade Perch have demonstrated incredible fast growing qualities.

"It is now clear that jade perch is a hardy, omnivorous species, capable of achieving rapid growth rates on relatively inexpensive diets.  It is, therefore reasonable to assume that this species can be grown at a relatively low cost of production.  Furthermore, while jade perch do accumulate significant stores of body fat, they are well suited to filleting and provide a high recovery rate of flaky, white flesh.

...... jade perch is an exceptionally good species for aquaculture production.  It must, however, be stressed that jade perch farming is still a very new industry which faces many challenges and uncertainties.  In my opinion, the biggest current limitation to industry expansion is the lack of public awareness and mainstream market acceptance.  These marketing issues must be addressed and overcome in order to permit jade perch production to develop to a level correlating to its biological potential.

Perch strike oil, the good oil!

In 1998 the CSIRO conducted a study on the beneficial oils that are found in Australian fish. More recently Queensland Jade Perch were tested.

When compared with around 200 other seafoods, (A term which includes farmed fish.) Queensland Jade Perch were found to contain extraordinary high levels of omega-3, making Queensland Jade Perch clearly number one of all the seafoods tested.

Number one, Queensland Jade Perch contained an incredible 2483 mg/100gm of omega-3 oils in the flesh.

Number two was the Sawfish, 1,667 milligrams of the good oil to every 100 grams.

Number three is the Atlantic Salmon. This fish has 842 milligrams per 100 grams.
